WHAT IS SMART LENS? (THREE FOCUS INTRAOCULAR LENSES)

Trifocal lenses, also called Smart Lenses, have been used for suitable patients in cataract surgeries for a long time. Smart lenses are trifocal intraocular lenses that provide the opportunity to solve multiple focus problems, not a single focus problem. In this way, they can also be used in the treatment of patients with refractive errors whose eyes are not suitable for laser treatment. After the treatment, patients can do tasks that require focus at both near and far distances on their own, without glasses.

70% of the focusing power of the human eye is provided by the cornea layer and 30% by the natural eye lens. In a healthy eye, the natural lens structure allows us to focus on both distant and close distances by stretching. As we get older, especially after the age of 40, many people lose their eye flexibility and begin to have problems with near vision.

In modern society, the importance of clear vision for all distances cannot be underestimated. Especially actions such as using computers, watching television, looking at the phone screen and reading books are actions that have taken place in the routine of our daily lives. It is undeniable that problems especially with near vision will reduce the quality of life.

The use of glasses and contact lenses are the first treatment methods used to correct near vision. Some patients do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses for various reasons. In addition, laser treatment is generally not suitable for patients over the age of 45. The recommended treatment method for these patients is smart lens operation.

By performing early cataract surgery with clear lens extraction, patients are prevented from experiencing cataract problems in the future and are enabled to obtain full vision at near, medium and far distances without glasses.

Another condition that is frequently observed, especially in older ages, is the loss of transparency of the natural eye lens, that is, cataract disease. Although there is a problem with distance vision at the beginning of the disease and you can continue to see clearly without the use of glasses, as the process progresses, near vision also deteriorates.

The permanent treatment of cataract is to surgically dissolve the damaged natural eye lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. Intraocular lenses can also be used in the treatment of presbyopia (near vision problem).

These intraocular lenses have different types and are named according to their focal points. These are monofocal (single focus), bifocal (bifocal) and trifocal (three focus) lenses.

Smart lenses (trifocal intraocular lenses) provide clear vision to patients at both near, far and intermediate distances. Thanks to intraocular lenses, patients can do all tasks that require watching television, using a computer and close reading with a single lens.

They eliminate the use of glasses for all these distances. These lenses, made of a special and flexible material, provide lifelong use from the moment they are placed in the eye.
